I am an experienced graphic designer, design educator, creative director, and design thinker. Over the past twenty years I've worked in both academia, teaching design, typography, motion, and publication work in R1 universities and tech college art programs, and in industry, leading creative teams and brand systems, largely in the scientific and research sectors. What connects them both is my philosophy of treating every project as a problem of communication and translation from concept to visual form.
I've always trusted that the fundamentals of the craft outlast whatever trend or tool happens to be in fashion. Running underneath my practical day-to-day work is a real fascination with semiotics and how type and image actually make meaning and how that meaning comes together in the person on the receiving end. It shapes how I practice design, how I teach design, and how I experience the world.
